Ch. Doukas at the event of the French Socialist Party: We must together fight the great battles for democracy in Europe
Athens Mayor Ch. Doukas attended the main campaign event of the French Socialist Party, emphasizing the need for progressive cooperation to defend democracy in Europe.
On February 8, Athens Mayor Ch. Doukas participated in the central pre-election event of the French Socialist Party, focusing on 'Common Battles β Challenges for Democracy in the Modern Era' as the theme. During the event, he had private meetings with Emmanuel GrΓ©goire, the candidate for Mayor of Paris, and Olivier Faure, the First Secretary of the Socialist Party. Doukas also joined a round table panel discussion with other mayors from European capitals, including Philippe Close from Brussels and Roberto Gualtieri from Rome.
Doukas highlighted the crucial role of progressive forces in defending democracy across Europe, stressing that collaboration between these groups is essential to confront the rise of the far-right. He reflected on Athens' experience in 2023, where progressive parties successfully worked together, achieving political stability and responding effectively to the challenges faced. His remarks resonate with broader concerns about the diminishing space for democratic principles in several European nations.
The event not only focused on local elections in France but also intended to forge alliances among progressive leaders from various European cities to combat common threats to democracy. Doukas's participation reflects Greece's active role in European political discourse and underscores the interconnectedness of local and European challenges in safeguarding democratic values.
