New labeling rules for goods will come into effect on February 17. Flags will appear at stalls

New labeling regulations requiring the display of country flags alongside product origins will be effective in Poland starting February 17, enhancing transparency about food sourcing.

Starting February 17, Poland will implement new regulations on product labeling, which will require sellers to not only indicate the country of origin of goods but also to display that country's flag. This initiative is highlighted by the Inspection of Trade Quality of Agricultural and Food Products (IJHARS) as a step beyond European Union requirements, aimed at improving consumer information about food products. These regulations are part of a broader update to food labeling laws established by the Polish Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Currently, fresh fruits and vegetables in Poland are labeled according to existing EU guidelines, which facilitate consumer understanding of where these products come from. The upcoming changes are intended to provide clearer insights for customers by making the origin of food items more visible and prominent. For example, when shopping, consumers will see flags next to fruits and vegetables, making it easier to identify not only their source but also potentially reinforcing national pride in local products.

The modifications will further extend to other food products like honey, jams, and juices. The IJHARS has noted that these changes are set to fully take effect by November 4, 2025, under an amendment to the existing food labeling regulations. This proactive approach aims to enhance transparency in the food supply chain and ensure that consumers are better informed about the origins of their food, aligning with ongoing trends in consumer rights and preferences for local sourcing.
