Kukah Centre, Yiaga, others give NASS two weeks to retain real-time e-transmission
Civil society groups in Nigeria are demanding that the National Assembly retain mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results and release the 2027 election timetable within two weeks.
Several civil society organizations, including the Kukah Centre and Yiaga Africa, have issued a statement urging Nigeria's National Assembly to finalize amendments to the Electoral Act to include mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results. They highlighted the urgency of this amendment during a press conference held in Abuja and called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to promptly release the timetable for the upcoming 2027 general elections.
The demand was echoed by Jake Epelle, the Founder and CEO of TAF Africa, who emphasized the importance of national interest in the discussions surrounding the Electoral Act amendments. He urged members of the conference committee responsible for harmonizing the Act to prioritize democratic accountability and institutional integrity over personal or political interests. The coalition of civil society groups believes the integrity of the electoral process is essential for Nigeriaβs democracy.
As Nigeria approaches the next general elections, the call for improved electoral transparency is crucial. The push for real-time electronic transmission aims to enhance credibility and public trust in the electoral system, especially following past controversies regarding the integrity of the electoral process. With the deadline set for two weeks, it remains to be seen how the National Assembly will respond to these pressing demands from civil society leaders.
