Ukraine's ambassador to Finland claims Russia is escalating its attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure in the midst of a harsh winter, aiming to create a humanitarian disaster.
The Ukrainian ambassador to Finland, Myhailo Vydoinyk, reported that Russia has intensified its strikes on Ukraine's energy facilities during the coldest winter months. In an interview with Yle, he emphasized that Russia seeks to create a humanitarian catastrophe and freeze the Ukrainian people, attempting to break their spirit. Vydoinyk detailed that over 200 attacks have targeted Ukraine's energy infrastructure since the start of the year, with a pronounced focus on the capital city, Kyiv, which is experiencing incredibly harsh conditions.
Ambassador Vydoinyk vividly described the living conditions in Kyiv, where many residents are experiencing temperatures comparable to those found in a refrigerator, around four to five degrees Celsius. He noted that such conditions are leading residents to sleep in winter clothing and multiple layers, highlighting the severe impact of the ongoing attacks on civilians. The ambassador's remarks underscore the dire humanitarian implications of the attacks and the urgent need for international support.
Moreover, Vydoinyk suggested that Russia's strategy might involve exacerbating these difficult circumstances to pressure the Ukrainian population into demanding that President Zelenskyy accept peace terms. This anticipated psychological warfare aims to exploit the suffering caused by the energy strikes, further complicating the already tense situation as Ukraine continues to resist Russian aggression while seeking unity and resilience among its people.
