During the India Today Education Conclave 2026, UGC Chairman Vineet Joshi addressed the alarming increase in suicide cases among college students, stating that attributing these tragedies to one single reason or person is not accurate. Joshi explained that the issue is complex and can stem from a variety of underlying factors, including a potential lack of communication between teachers and college administration that may lead to difficulties in monitoring student behavior. This has made it harder to recognize issues students might be facing.

He also introduced the mechanisms in place for better student support and monitoring within educational institutions. Joshi mentioned a structured approach involving senior fellows who oversee a group of 6 to 7 students, as well as a faculty guidance system where a faculty member is responsible for around 15 to 16 students. This system aims to create a more supportive environment for students, enhancing their educational experience and potentially helping to prevent such tragic events from occurring.

Furthermore, Joshi's remarks underscore the importance of addressing mental health and well-being in higher education settings. By acknowledging the multifaceted nature of the problem and advocating for a more integrated support system within colleges, the UGC is working towards creating an environment where students feel more supported and where their challenges can be recognized and addressed more effectively. This approach is essential in mitigating the rising trend of student suicides in Indian colleges.
