Tragic Drinking Incident in Zarasai: a 60-year-old Man Fatally Beat a Fellow Drinker for Stealing Food from the Refrigerator
A 60-year-old man was fatally beaten during a drinking party in Zarasai after he confronted another guest for stealing food.
On May 23, 2025, in a residential building on Šiaulių street in Zarasai, a tragic incident unfolded during a drinking party. Greicio Slavinskas confronted another guest, identified as O.N., after he allegedly witnessed him stealing food from the host's refrigerator. This confrontation escalated quickly as Slavinskas reacted violently, striking O.N. multiple times, at least 12 strikes in total, with a significant focus on the victim’s head.
Despite Slavinskas's claims in court that his punches were not severe, forensic experts provided a starkly different perspective, concluding that O.N. died from severe blunt force trauma, leading to brain swelling and acute respiratory and cardiac failure. The medical experts emphasized that after suffering such injuries, O.N. could have survived only for a matter of minutes, underscoring the severity of the violence inflicted during the altercation.
The court ruled that Slavinskas acted with indirect intent. Although there was no direct evidence indicating that he aimed to kill O.N., the nature and intensity of his violence suggested a disregard for the victim's life. This incident raises critical questions about alcohol-fueled violence, the concerning trends related to personal conflicts escalating to physical harm, and the need for addressing issues of substance abuse in social settings.
