HMRC issues new message to 758,000 people in one age group who are owed £2,242
The HMRC is alerting 758,000 young individuals to claim their Child Trust Funds during National Apprenticeship Week, with each fund potentially worth up to £2,242.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is issuing an important reminder to young people who are yet to claim their Child Trust Fund, emphasizing the financial support available during National Apprenticeship Week from February 9 to 15. The government agency reported that approximately 758,000 individuals could be missing out on money from their Child Trust Fund accounts, which were designed to provide long-term savings for children born between September 1, 2002, and January 2, 2011.
These accounts initially received a government contribution of at least £250, which can grow over time, underscoring their importance as a financial asset for young adults beginning their careers. Once individuals reach the age of 16, they can manage their accounts. However, it's not until they turn 18 that they can access the funds, with the option to either withdraw the money or reinvest it. This announcement aims to ensure that young apprentices are aware of their rights to these funds, particularly as they navigate their early working lives.
The HMRC's campaign also highlights the significance of financial literacy and saving from a young age, particularly in an apprenticeship context where many individuals under 24 are beginning their professional journeys. By reaching out to this demographic and encouraging them to take action, the HMRC hopes to mitigate potential financial losses and promote responsible savings habits among the younger generation.
