Five police officers arrested on suspicion of abuse of office

Five officers from the State Police of the Riga regional department and one former officer have been arrested on suspicion of abusing their office for personal gain.

In late January and early February, the Internal Security Bureau (IDB) arrested five officials from the State Police's Riga regional department along with a former officer on suspicion of abusing their official position. The IDB revealed that during pre-trial investigations, evidence emerged that both former and current police officials misused their positions by illegally sharing sensitive information related to traffic accidents with another police officer. This individual, who was arrested in December 2025 for engaging in business without registration and permits, is under investigation for orchestrating the misconduct.

Additionally, the pre-trial investigation uncovered that the police officer arrested in December incited others to abuse their authority for financial gain. This officer is now also suspected of illegal possession and use of a means of payment, further complicating the legal implications surrounding the case. The IDB has undertaken numerous procedural actions as part of the criminal proceedings, which highlight a concerning breach of trust within the police force.

This situation raises important questions about the integrity of law enforcement agencies and trust in public institutions in Latvia. The IDB's involvement indicates an active approach to tackling corruption within the police ranks, but it also underscores the need for rigorous oversight and accountability mechanisms to prevent such abuses of power in the future. The outcomes of this investigation will likely have significant implications for public perception of law enforcement in the region, as well as for the careers of those involved.
