The National Budget Council is unnecessary, Babiš said. He does not want to follow it, he cannot abolish it

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš declared the National Budget Council unnecessary, stating that he disagrees with its assessment of the government's budget proposal for this year.

At a press conference following a government meeting, Czech Finance Minister Alena Schillerová confirmed that she is not preparing any moves to abolish the National Budget Council (NRR), despite Prime Minister Andrej Babiš's recent remarks. Babiš criticized the NRR as being unnecessary and noted that he does not agree with its reviews of government budget proposals. Schillerová emphasized that the council was established by law and acknowledged that there are disagreements between the ministry and the council regarding budget matters.

The Ministry of Finance has entered into a dispute with the NRR over the state budget proposal for the current year, which the council criticizes for being contrary to the budgetary responsibility law, citing a deficit of 310 billion CZK that exceeds the established spending limits. The ministry, however, contends that the deficit restrictions do not apply as the government addressed the budget proposal after it returned from the Chamber of Deputies, rather than during the standard September timeframe.

Babiš's disparagement of the NRR and disagreement with its stance on the budget reflects ongoing tensions between the executive branch and financial oversight institutions in the Czech Republic. This conflict may have implications for fiscal policy and the government's approach to managing public finances as it navigates through the criticisms raised by the NRR.
