Former lawyer from Słupsk legally convicted of attempted murder
A former lawyer has been legally convicted of attempted murder in Słupsk after attacking two men with a sharp object in August 2022.
The Gdańsk Court of Appeal upheld the majority of the first-instance court's ruling against Katarzyna R., a former lawyer from Słupsk, who was convicted of attempted murder. The court only modified the legal framework related to the application of a safeguard measure involving addiction therapy, acknowledging the need for rehabilitation alongside punishment. The events that led to this conviction occurred on August 5, 2022, when Katarzyna R. allegedly attacked two men with a sharp instrument on Lelewela Street in Słupsk, injuring one in the neck and abdomen, while the other was harmed in the buttock.
Following the attack, R. fled the scene in her vehicle but did not go far; she crashed into a dumpster and a fence before abandoning her car. When the police arrived to apprehend her, she resisted arrest, verbally abusing the officers, and physically struggling with them, even headbutting one. The prosecution sought a total sentence of 12 years and 7 months in prison and requested that a preventative measure be imposed in the form of addiction therapy to address her issues, emphasizing the importance of rehabilitation for violent offenders.
This case has garnered attention due to the nature of the crime and the assailant’s professional background as a lawyer. The implication of a legal professional committing such serious offenses raises questions about mental health and substance abuse issues among those in the legal field, and the need for more support and intervention programs for individuals who may be at risk of similar violent behaviors.
