Recife celebrates Frevo Day with over 30 performances from orchestras, carnival groups, and blocs; see the schedule
Recife celebrates Frevo Day on February 9th with a full day of musical and dance performances highlighting the region's cultural heritage.
On February 9, 1907, the term "frevo" was first mentioned in the press in Recife's 'Jornal Pequeno'. A century later, this vibrant musical genre was officially recognized as a Brazilian Intangible Cultural Heritage by the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan). To commemorate this recognition, Frevo Day has been added to the calendar of cultural celebrations in Brazil.
This year, on February 9th, Recife is hosting a nearly 12-hour long cultural program in its central neighborhoods of Bairro do Recife and Derby. The festivities include free performances by various orchestras, lyrical blocs, and frevo dancers, welcoming audiences of all ages. The day's events are scheduled to run from 8 AM to 7:30 PM, featuring a diverse array of artistic expressions that embody the multicultural carnival spirit of Recife.
The celebration's agenda is planned in four major acts: "Alvorada dos Passistas" (Dawn of the Dancers), "Almoço com Frevo" (Lunch with Frevo), and the main parade showcasing the lively essence of this unique genre. This event not only honors the past and present of frevo but also aims to engage the community and promote the cultural richness of Recife to both residents and visitors alike.
