Prosecutor on searches at Skvernelis and Starkevičius: announced the theory of what they might have done

Prosecutors in Lithuania conducted searches at the offices and homes of two members of parliament, Saulius Skvernelis and Kazys Starkevičius, as part of a corruption investigation.

On a Monday morning, Lithuanian law enforcement officials executed searches at the offices and residences of two prominent members of parliament: Saulius Skvernelis, the chairman of the Democratic Party ‘Vardan Lietuvos’, and Kazys Starkevičius from the Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats. These actions were taken by the Special Investigation Service (STT) as part of an ongoing pre-trial investigation involving alleged corrupt activities connected to the State Plant Production Service.

During a press conference held by the Prosecutor General's Office, Chief Prosecutor Artūras Urbelis confirmed that searches were conducted in both parliamentarians' offices and homes. The investigation is focusing on possible corruption, and the authorities consider Skvernelis and Starkevičius as special witnesses who might provide insights into the suspected criminal activities. Urbelis stated, "Decisions have been made to interrogate them as individuals who may be able to testify about their own alleged criminal conduct."

This development points toward a significant escalation in the investigation of political figures in Lithuania, reflecting ongoing concerns about corruption in public service. The outcome of this inquiry could have substantial implications for the political landscape in Lithuania, especially for the involved parties and their future roles in government. This situation underscores the broader issues of accountability and integrity within the Lithuanian political system.
