Russia Accuses Poland of Involvement in Assassination of Deputy Head of Russian Military Intelligence

Russia's FSB has accused Poland of assisting Ukraine in the assassination plot against a senior Russian military intelligence official.

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has made allegations against Poland, claiming that two suspects have confessed to their involvement in an assassination plot against a senior member of Russia's military intelligence, specifically, Deputy Head General Konstantin Alekseyev. According to the FSB, the shooter was allegedly hired with the assistance of Polish intelligence, and this individual, of Ukrainian descent and a Russian citizen, was reportedly recruited by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in August of the previous year while he was located in Ternopil, Ukraine. The FSB further alleges that the shooter's recruitment involved his son, who is a Polish citizen living in Poland, facilitating the connection with Polish intelligence agencies.

The incident allegedly took place in a significant and brazen manner, with Alekseyev being shot last week in the hallway of his residence by the assailant who had reportedly been promised $30,000 for the assassination. Alekseyev, aged 64, has a controversial history; he was involved in organizing activities for the notorious Wagner Group and has been linked to Russian military operations in Syria. His actions have drawn considerable attention from international authorities, leading to sanctions imposed by the United States for cyber misconduct and for attempts to interfere in the U.S. electoral process, as well as earlier sanctions by the European Union in 2019 concerning his connections to a former Russian double agent.

These developments spotlight the increasing tensions between Russia, Ukraine, and Poland, as well as the broader geopolitical implications of such allegations. The FSB's claims not only indicate a deterioration in relations among these nations but also reflect growing concerns about international interference and covert operations in the region, leaving analysts to ponder the potential for further escalation in hostilities following these accusations.
