Emergency Situation: Another Pipe Burst in Kaunas
A pipe burst in Kaunas has led to part of Gričiupio Street being flooded, marking yet another incident for the city's water infrastructure during harsh winter conditions.
On Monday morning, a pipe burst near the Gričiupis district in Kaunas, resulting in flooding of a section of Gričiupio Street. This incident follows a similar occurrence on Friday along V. Krėvės Avenue as well as previous disruptions in January, affecting various streets including Baltijos and Partizanų due to pipe failures caused by extreme cold weather. A local resident reported the situation at approximately 10:30 AM, underlining the ongoing issues with the water supply infrastructure in the area.
The recent freezing temperatures in Lithuania have exacerbated the situation, increasing the number of water main breaks. According to Ramūnas Šulskus, the director of Kauno Vandenys, the conditions are manageable; however, he noted that cast iron pipes are especially vulnerable to breaking when the soil shifts due to freezing. In contrast, polyethylene pipes can contract from the cold and sometimes dislodge, leading to further complications for the city's water supply systems.
Looking ahead, the authorities anticipate more incidents related to ground movement during the thawing period. Current weather reports from Meteo.lt indicate that Lithuania will not see snow today, but cold temperatures will persist, ranging from -6 to -11 degrees Celsius at night, potentially contributing to more infrastructure challenges as conditions remain harsh throughout the week.
