'I paid £150 a month to live in a cupboard - I couldn't find anywhere else'
A man in Bristol shares his experience of living in a small 'shoe cupboard' to save money while preparing for a move to Australia.
Liam Gardener, a 26-year-old man from Bristol, faced a significant challenge after his previous tenancy ended unexpectedly. With plans to move to Australia in June 2024, he needed a temporary living arrangement that would allow him to continue working and saving money. After exhausting options for short-term rentals, he accepted a friend’s offer to stay in her cramped 3ft by 10ft 'shoe cupboard' for just £150 a month, considering it a reasonable deal given his financial constraints.
Despite the tiny living space, Liam was able to downsize his belongings and adapt to his new, limited accommodation. The arrangement came with a reasonable understanding between him and his friend; she didn’t require him to pay rent but they agreed upon a contribution towards utility bills. This unconventional living situation allowed Liam to save approximately £2,500 during the five months he would be in the cupboard, significantly aiding his plans for a future in Australia.
The story highlights the current housing struggles many individuals face, particularly in cities like Bristol where affordable accommodations are scarce. Liam's experience sheds light on the lengths young professionals may go to in order to secure financial stability while navigating the complexities of modern housing markets, reflecting broader trends around housing affordability and temporary living situations among young people today.
