VIDEO: Driver in Riga Fails to Notice Tram and Causes Multiple Vehicle Collision
A driver in Riga caused a collision involving multiple vehicles, including a tram, after failing to notice traffic conditions ahead.
On February 5th, traffic was significantly affected for drivers on Slokas Street in Riga heading towards Imanta due to a multi-vehicle collision that involved a tram. One lane was blocked by several wrecked cars, and the tram was stranded on the tracks for half an hour following the incident. The collision occurred when a driver, Jānis, in a Toyota, was halted in traffic and was struck from behind, leading to the involvement of four vehicles including three cars and the tram itself.
The most heavily damaged vehicle was a Lexus, which suffered serious structural damage as it was hit by both the tram and another car. Witnesses noted that the Lexus had most of its bodywork destroyed and several windows broken. A Mitsubishi also sustained heavy scratches along the driver's side and front-end damage from the Toyota, illustrating the severity of the collision and the impact each vehicle suffered. Traffic towards Dzirciems was temporarily halted while the public transport vehicle was towed away, allowing the tracks to be cleared and traffic to resume.
This accident highlights the challenges faced by drivers in urban areas where heavy traffic and public transport intersect. The failure to notice a tram in the midst of heavy congestion not only endangered the drivers involved but also disrupted public transport services. Local news outlet "Degpunktā" provided detailed coverage of the incident, reflecting the ongoing issues with traffic safety in Riga, particularly surrounding areas with frequent tram crossings.
