Kim Min-jong won a bronze medal in the men's over 100 kg category at the IJF 2026 Paris Grand Slam.
Kim Min-jong, ranked 6th in the world, achieved a commendable bronze medal victory in the men's over 100 kg category at the IJF 2026 Paris Grand Slam held in Paris. On September 9, Kim triumphed over Irakli Demetraashvili from Georgia, ranked 19th in the world, with a decisive victory using the ‘sotemi-waza’ technique in the medal match. Prior to this, he faced a setback in the semi-finals against Japan's Kanta Nakano, where he lost after being caught in a high throw maneuver.
In contrast, Lee Hyun-ji, ranked first in the world's women's over 100 kg category, was unable to secure a medal. Her journey ended in the semi-finals when she faced off against Julia Pratolopua from France, the 13th ranked judoka, where she lost in an extended match by holding technique. In the bronze medal match, she was bested by Japan's Mao Arai, ranked 8th in the world, who executed a successful throw that left Lee without any chance to retaliate.
These results at the Paris Grand Slam highlight the competitive landscape of judo, especially for South Korean athletes, as they prepare for upcoming international competitions. Kim's bronze adds to the nation's hopes for success in future events, while Lee's performance underscores the challenges faced by top competitors in pursuit of medals on the world stage.
