Nigeria: Tinubu, Alia Urged to Provide Amenities in Banditry-Ravaged Benue Communities

A socio-cultural organization is urging Nigerian leaders to assess and improve facilities in communities affected by banditry in Benue State as displaced residents begin to return home.

In Benue State, Nigeria, the Tyoshin Development Association (TDA) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Hyacinth Alia to conduct a comprehensive needs assessment of communities severely affected by banditry for over a decade. This plea comes as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are returning to their homes but find them lacking in essential services. The TDA's president, Tarnongo Timothy Tiza, highlighted the dire circumstances these returnees face, including contaminated water sources, and the absence of roads, health facilities, and schools.

During the announcement made in Makurdi, Tiza emphasized the importance of addressing the needs of these vulnerable populations, who have suffered from insurgent violence that has rendered many areas unsafe and uninhabitable. He pointed out that the lack of safe drinking water and basic social infrastructure is exacerbating the challenges faced by those returning to rebuild their lives after displacement. Communities like Tyoughatee/Ijaha and Gbaange/Tongov have been identified as some of the most affected by ongoing violence, leading to urgent calls for governmental action.

The implications of this situation are significant for both state and national governance. The survival and rehabilitation of IDPs depend heavily on government response and investment in local infrastructures, such as healthcare and education. The TDA's requests are not only about immediate humanitarian aid but also long-term recovery initiatives that would foster stability and development in areas plagued by violence, making the call for action a crucial point in ongoing discussions about security and humanitarian support in Nigeria.
