The Rediscovered Genius of Hans Rott

The Teatro Comunale di Bologna has presented the Italian premiere of Hans Rott's Symphony in E major, a composition that remained neglected for a century.

The Teatro Comunale di Bologna has recently showcased the Italian premiere of the Symphony in E major by the Austrian composer Hans Rott, a work that was hidden in the archives of the Austrian National Library for over a century. Rott, who lived from 1858 to 1884, faced harsh criticism from the renowned composer Johannes Brahms, who deemed Rott’s music to be filled with trivialities and nonsensical elements. This rejection had grave implications for Rott's mental health, leading to his institutionalization in a mental hospital after he threatened a train passenger with a gun, claiming that Brahms had filled the train with dynamite. Subsequently, Rott's life was marked by despair, which culminated in two suicide attempts, and he eventually died at the young age of 26 from tuberculosis.
