National Assembly forms special committee to process the 'Special Law for US Investment'... Agreement by March 9
South Korea's National Assembly has established a special committee to discuss the 'Special Law for US Investment' in response to US-Korea tariff negotiations, with a deadline for bipartisan agreement set for March 9.
The National Assembly of South Korea has formed a special committee aimed at processing the 'Special Law for Strategic Investment Management for US-Korea Relations,' a legislative measure that arises from recent tariff negotiations between the two countries. This decision was made on the 9th, during a plenary session, where bipartisan support was shown through a vote to create this committee specifically for handling the law's discussions and approvals. The establishment of this committee follows a Memorandum of Understanding between the South Korean and US governments, signed on November 14, regarding strategic investment discussions.
The newly formed special committee will consist of 16 members, including eight from the Democratic Party, seven from the People Power Party, and one from an independent party. To ensure comprehensive representation, at least one member from the National Assembly's Political Affairs, Finance, and Industry Committees will be included. The special committee is entrusted with examining the law, and there is a stipulated timeline for its discussion to reach agreement before March 9, signifying the urgency surrounding this legislation.
This legislative action takes place in the context of increased pressure from the US government regarding tariff issues. Recently, President Donald Trump highlighted the lack of legislative action to support US-Korea tariff negotiations and hinted at the possibility of raising tariffs on Korean products to 25%. In light of this, the People Power Party shifted its stance to support the special law's processing, illustrating the influence of external economic pressures on domestic legislative actions. The Speaker of the National Assembly, Woo Won-sik, expressed gratitude for the bipartisan cooperation and emphasized the importance of expedited discussions in order to address pressing economic ties with the US.
