Serious warning for small house residents: Don't do this
Residents are warned against attempting to thaw frozen pipes themselves due to the risk of fires.
Throughout the winter, numerous fires have occurred due to attempts to thaw frozen pipes, as reported by the Finnish Rescue Service (SPEK). The organization's development manager, Heli Salovaara, cautions that homeowners should not attempt to thaw frozen pipes on their own and should seek professional help instead. Pipes are susceptible to freezing if they are not buried deep enough or if not properly insulated against frost, affecting not only detached houses but also townhouses and cabins.
However, the issue is not limited to residential buildings; even schools and restaurants have reported instances of frozen pipes. The risk of fire arises when individuals try to thaw pipes without the necessary expertise. Using open flames from gas torches or hot air blowers can potentially burst or melt plastic pipes, leading to serious fire hazards. Salovaara emphasizes that there have already been multiple incidents this winter resulting from such DIY thawing efforts.
The SPEK stresses that pipe thawing should always be left to HVAC professionals or property maintenance experts, as they have the relevant experience and knowledge for doing the job safely. This warning serves as an important reminder for residents to prioritize safety and professional assistance in preventing dangerous situations this winter season.
