Disruptions on the second metro line. Buckets positioned at the stations
Passengers are encountering unpleasant conditions at the newly opened Trocka and Kondratowicza metro stations in Warsaw due to leaks and water damage.
The Trocka and Kondratowicza stations of Warsaw's second metro line, opened in 2019 and 2022 respectively, are facing significant issues with leaks. Passengers have reported buckets placed on the platforms and in the corridors to catch water dripping from the ceilings. Cardboard is also lying on the floors to absorb the water as it seeps through, raising concerns about the integrity of the newly constructed stations. This situation has deteriorated, leading to dissatisfaction among commuters who expect high standards from modern public transport infrastructure.
Local media, including the "Gazeta Wyborcza", have highlighted the extent of the problem, noting that replacement of flooring materials from terrazzo to plastic sheeting has begun in the corridors leading to the underground library "Metroteka". Some areas have been cordoned off, and several ticket vending machines have been put out of service due to the water damage. Moreover, rusting reinforcing bars have been spotted on one wall, raising flags about construction quality and maintenance practices of the metro system.
Representatives from Metro Warszawskie have attributed these issues to challenging weather conditions and high groundwater levels, suggesting that such leaks are not entirely uncommon in underground stations. They emphasized that the leaks often occur around expansion joints where different structural elements meet, which are particularly susceptible to water ingress. This situation points to the ongoing challenges faced by urban infrastructure in handling environmental factors, and raises questions about the need for better oversight and maintenance protocols for public transport facilities in the city.
