Jordi González: "It took me a three-week coma and a very tough illness to learn to say no"
Television presenter Jordi González reflects on his near-fatal health crisis from a year ago, stating that it taught him the importance of setting boundaries in his work life.
Television presenter Jordi González, who is 64 years old and from Barcelona, underwent a life-threatening health crisis in early 2025 due to bilateral bronchopneumonia complicated by kidney failure, which landed him in a Medellín hospital's ICU for nine weeks. During this period, he spent three weeks in a coma, where doctors even prepared his family for the worst, indicating they might need to say their farewells. Remarkably, González made a recovery, which he described as a wake-up call to reassess his priorities and work-life balance.
Upon recuperation, González expressed his commitment to embracing life more fully, emphasizing that he had been working excessively and had missed out on personal fulfillment and leisure activities. He articulated his intention to stop neglecting his own needs by saying, "Now when I can talk and be myself again, I'm going to dedicate my time to doing things I couldn’t do because I worked too much." This profound experience has catalyzed a shift in his perspective as he considers the importance of self-care and the necessity to say "no" when overwhelmed.
While González has plans to slow down, he has not chosen to retire yet, as new work opportunities have arisen. He seems ready to take advantage of these opportunities but maintains a newfound awareness of his limits and desires, aiming to prioritize a healthier lifestyle in both personal and professional realms. His story serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the critical need for balance in today’s fast-paced world.
