Somalia Unveils Modern Labour Law to Promote Fair Work and Stronger Social Dialogue
The Federal Government of Somalia has launched a revised Labour Code aimed at enhancing labor rights and promoting fair work conditions.
The Federal Government of Somalia has officially launched the revised Somali Labour Code (Law No. 36, 2024) during a ceremony at Hotel Afrik in Mogadishu, marking a significant advancement in labor governance. This updated legislation seeks to establish a modern legal framework that supports decent work and fair employment relations while ensuring the protection of the rights and responsibilities of both employers and employees.
The launch event was attended by a wide range of national stakeholders, including Members of Parliament, Federal Ministers, representatives from Federal Member States, and key organizations like the Somali Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Federation of Somali Trade Unions. During the ceremony, Professor Salim Alio Ibrow, the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, emphasized that the reformed law is designed to foster a labor system grounded in principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability. He highlighted that the new legislation is crucial for the development of the labor market and social dialogue within the country.
The introduction of this Labour Code comes at a pivotal time for Somalia, as the country continues to rebuild and stabilize after years of conflict. By implementing laws that protect workers' rights and promote fair working conditions, the Somali government aims to enhance social dialogue and cooperation between workers and employers, which is essential for economic growth and sustainable development in the region.
