Kim Hyun-tae, after being dismissed, poses with Jeon Han-gil… Democratic Party calls it an insult to the military, stating he deserves only trial

The Democratic Party criticized Kim Hyun-tae, a formerly dismissed military officer, for collaborating with far-right YouTubers to denigrate the military, following his controversial statements regarding a coup attempt.

Kim Hyun-tae, a former Colonel and head of the 707th Special Mission Battalion, faced criticism from the Democratic Party's National Defense and Security Special Committee after he dismissed serious accusations of rebellion and claimed that martial law was legal. The committee expressed outrage that, immediately after his dismissal, Kim aligned himself with far-right YouTube personalities to insult the Republic of Korea and its military. They highlighted his actions during the alleged coup, where he breached parliamentary security, as deeply disturbing and unpatriotic.

The Democratic Party condemned his statements, including his claims that the coup was fabricated and his attempts to cast his actions in a favorable light, labeling them as irresponsible and part of an extremist agenda. His involvement in far-right gatherings and broadcasts, particularly one featuring the right-wing former Korean history instructor Jeon Han-gil, raised alarms about his influence and the potential threat he posed to democratic norms. The party stressed that justifying a coup undermines the military's integrity and disrespects its personnel.

As Kim faces trial for his alleged role in the attempted coup, the Democratic Party emphasized the importance of accountability and vowed that there would be no tolerance for actions that threaten constitutional order. They declared that Kim Hyun-tae's future lies only in the unforgiving scrutiny of the law, calling for imperative judgments against his actions that have undermined thousands of soldiers' dignity.
