Kenya: Kondele Quarry Claims Lives of 5 Siblings Aged 9 to 14

A tragic incident in Kisumu resulted in the drowning of four siblings aged 9 to 14 in an open quarry while attempting to rescue one another.

In the Kanyakwar area of Kisumu Central sub-county, a heartbreaking incident unfolded as four young siblings drowned in an open quarry while trying to rescue each other. The boys, aged between 14 and 9, were playing near the water when one ventured into a deeper part of the quarry and began to drown. His three brothers jumped in to save him, but all four became overwhelmed and ultimately lost their lives.

Kondele Chief Maurice Ajwang reported that rescue operations successfully retrieved all four bodies after the tragic event. The community is grappling with the shock and sorrow of the loss, prompting local leaders to issue warnings to parents and guardians about the dangers of allowing children to play near abandoned quarries and other unprotected water bodies, particularly during school breaks when supervision may be lacking.

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the hazards posed by such hazardous sites, which often attract children looking for play areas. Authorities and community leaders are now urged to take action to secure these dangerous locations and educate families about the risks associated with open water bodies, to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
