INDEC: The Government formalized the appointment of Pedro Lines as the new director
The Argentine government has officially appointed Pedro Lines as the new director of INDEC, replacing Marco Lavagna who resigned last week.
On Monday, the Argentine Government formalized the appointment of Pedro Lines as the new director of the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC), following the resignation of Marco Lavagna. The decree, signed by President Javier Milei and Minister of Economy Luis Caputo, accepted Lavagna's resignation and confirmed Lines in his new role. Lines had prior experience in the same institution, having managed the Technical Directorate since February 4.
The announcement of Lavagna's departure came shortly before the proposed implementation of a new inflation index, which has ultimately been postponed. Lavagna, who was affiliated with the peronist movement and linked to Sergio Massa's Renovating Front, had been in office since December 2019 when Alberto FernΓ‘ndez first assumed the presidency. His tenure extended through the government transition in December 2023, indicating a continuity of his leadership.
Minister Caputo attempted to downplay the situation, suggesting that Lavagna's resignation was not indicative of a wider crisis within the government. Instead, it appears to be a strategic move as the government seeks to reshape the leadership at INDEC amidst monetary reforms and the ongoing economic challenges that Argentina faces, particularly concerning inflation management.
