Niigata Prefecture Requests Disaster Dispatch from the Self-Defense Forces for Snow Removal at Homes of Elderly Living Alone in Uonuma City
Niigata Prefecture has requested the Self-Defense Forces to assist with snow removal for elderly individuals living alone as heavy snowfall raises concerns about building collapses.
On January 9, Niigata Prefecture requested assistance from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force due to fears of building collapses caused by heavy snowfall that began on January 21. The 12th Brigade of the Ground Self-Defense Force commenced snow removal operations specifically targeting the roofs of homes belonging to elderly residents in Uonuma City, which has experienced exceptional snowfall this winter. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that Uonuma City had accumulated 268 centimeters of snow as of the morning of the same day, which is 1.3 times the average for this time of year.
Tragically, this winter has already seen 22 fatalities from snow-related accidents during snow removal operations across the prefecture. The severity of the situation is further underscored by reports indicating that the heavy snowfall not only threatens buildings but is also affecting local infrastructure. In light of these circumstances, the prefectural government is prioritizing the safety of vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly who may be isolated and at risk from the severe weather conditions.
Amid these challenges, the region is also facing the implications of conducting an election during this severe winter weather, raising questions about logistical capabilities and voter access. Experts highlight the critical nature of the situation, as the intersection of poor weather and civic responsibilities can exacerbate risks for communities already facing significant challenges due to the heavy snowfall.
