Two miners' remains found in a clandestine grave in La Concordia: Who are they?

Two miners have been identified among the remains recovered from a clandestine grave in La Concordia, Sinaloa, Mexico.

Authorities in Mexico have confirmed the discovery of two miners' remains in a clandestine grave located in El Verde, part of the Concordia region in Sinaloa. The identified individuals are José Ángel Hernández Vélez, 37, from Zacatecas, and José Manuel Castañeda Hernández, 43, from Guerrero. Family members notified the General Prosecutor's Office, which has been conducting forensic investigations since February 6.

Both miners were reportedly recovered from a grave that surfaced amid ongoing security concerns in the region. José Ángel Hernández’s remains showed signs of decomposition, but family members positively identified him to the authorities. In contrast, José Manuel Castañeda Hernández was recognized due to distinctive iguana tattoos found on his arms, an important distinguishing feature that aided in confirming his identity.

The discovery underscores the ongoing issues of violence and disappearances faced in Mexico, particularly in regions with active mining operations and organized crime. The forensic protocols being followed aim to reveal the circumstances surrounding their deaths, shedding light on the broader crisis of missing persons as families await further answers about their loved ones in a society grappling with the impact of such violence.
