Landslide sweeps away trees and hits restaurant on the coast of São Paulo

A landslide in Bertioga, São Paulo, struck the Japanese restaurant Sushi Flow, causing significant damage but no injuries.

A landslide occurred in Bertioga, a coastal town in São Paulo, impacting the Sushi Flow, a Japanese restaurant, and three neighboring properties. The incident happened late on Saturday night, and according to the owner, Daniel Haddad, local residents had never experienced such an event before in the area. Haddad noted that in recent weeks, he had observed new streams of water flowing down the hill behind the restaurant, which may have contributed to the landslide's occurrence.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the incident, as the restaurant's front section and main dining area remained unaffected. However, the bar located at the back of the property, near the forest, suffered severe damage from falling large trees and will need to be closed temporarily for repairs. This suggests that while the immediate cause of the landslide might be attributed to seasonal conditions, there could be a larger conversation regarding environmental management and safety regulations for establishments situated near unstable terrain.

The landslide has raised concerns among local residents and business owners about the safety of properties in the area, especially as it is noted to be a rare event according to long-time locals. This situation may pressure local authorities to investigate further into hillside management and potential preventive measures to ensure the safety of residents and businesses in this coastal community in the future.
