Cloudberry Crisis in Northern Sweden

A shortage of cloudberries has led Norrmejerier to remove its popular cloudberry film from shelves in Northern Sweden due to insufficient supply caused by weather conditions and a lack of berry pickers.

Northern Sweden is facing a cloudberry crisis, with Norrmejerier announcing the withdrawal of its beloved cloudberry film, known as Fjällfil Hjortron, due to a severe shortage of cloudberries. The company stated that the low availability of berries was a result of both a lack of berry pickers in the forests and extreme weather conditions that were too cold initially, followed by unusually warm and dry weather. This combination has dramatically affected the harvest of cloudberries during the summer of 2025, which are crucial for Norrmejerier's production process.

Norrmejerier relies on approximately 20 tons of cloudberries annually to maintain the production of its signature product. However, this summer, the crop yield fell short, prompting the dairy company to halt production rather than compromise on the quality and flavors of their product. Product manager Anna Norrgård emphasized the importance of using high-quality ingredients, stating that they are completely dependent on what nature provides. If the cloudberries run out, they prefer to pause the product instead of diluting its characteristics with substandard components.

The company plans to only release the cloudberry film in stores within Norrland until the end of April to May. This decision highlights the challenges of agricultural production tied closely to environmental factors and labor availability, pushing immediate supply pressures to the forefront and indicating potential long-term implications for the local economy and consumer enjoyment of regional delicacies.
