New batteries enhance electric car performance in extreme cold

The electric vehicle industry is innovating sodium-ion batteries to improve performance in freezing temperatures, demonstrating better resilience than traditional lithium-ion batteries.

The electric vehicle (EV) industry is addressing a significant challenge in colder regions: the diminished performance of conventional batteries at sub-zero temperatures. Recent reports indicate that the development of sodium-ion batteries shows promise for superior performance in freezing conditions. These batteries, like the NEXTRA model launched by the Chinese company CATL, have demonstrated remarkable cold resistance, retaining up to 90% of their capacity at -40 degrees Celsius and functioning down to -50 degrees without substantial performance degradation or energy loss. This capability positions sodium-ion batteries as a more reliable alternative in harsh climates.

Sodium-ion batteries offer an energy density of approximately 175 watt-hours per kilogram, making them comparable to lithium iron phosphate batteries currently used in many electric vehicles. The production of sodium-ion batteries is also advantageous due to the abundance and lower cost of sodium compared to lithium, potentially leading to more affordable electric vehicles for consumers. The development not only aims to improve battery vitality in cold weather but also addresses cost-effectiveness in battery manufacturing, which is a critical factor considering the rising demand for EVs worldwide.

Changan Auto, in collaboration with CATL, has already initiated testing of these advanced batteries in passenger vehicles, signaling a positive step towards broader adoption of sodium-ion technology in the automotive sector. This innovative approach could pave the way for enhanced usability of electric vehicles in colder climates, ultimately contributing to the wider acceptance and growth of electric mobility, while also addressing environmental concerns through improved battery performance and sustainability during extreme weather conditions.
