Orsmaa was a founding member and artistic director of Ryhmäteatteri and served as a theatre director at various institutions, including the Turku City Theatre, Vaasa City Theatre, and Tampereen Työväen Teatteri. He was not only recognized for his directorial work but also contributed as a researcher and educator, alongside writing theatre and television reviews for various publications.

Over the course of his extensive career, Orsmaa received several accolades, including the Nordic Radio Drama Prize in 1975 and the Thalia Prize in 1977 and 1981, acknowledging his significant contributions to the Finnish cultural landscape. His legacy endures through the many productions and performances he was involved in throughout his life.
