Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake Shakes Cuba; It is the Second of 2026

A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck southeast of Guantánamo, Cuba, marking the second earthquake of 2026.

The National Center for Seismological Research (Cenais) in Cuba reported that a 5.6 magnitude earthquake occurred on Sunday southeast of the Guantánamo province. The earthquake's epicenter was located 24 kilometers southeast of the municipality of Imías, at a depth of 7.1 kilometers, striking at 07:00 local time (12:07 GMT). Residents in several eastern provinces, including Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, and Granma, felt the tremors.

This recent quake follows another minor earthquake that was recorded on January 9, with a magnitude of 4.0 in Granma province. In 2025, a significant number of tremors, totaling 4,535, were registered in Cuba, although only fifteen were felt by the population. During the first half of that year, the Pilón-Chivirico area alone accounted for 696 of these earthquakes, indicating it as the most seismically active region in the country.

The recurrence of seismic activity in Cuba is a notable concern for local authorities and residents alike. With two significant earthquakes occurring in the early part of 2026, it raises questions about seismic preparedness and the potential risks associated with larger quakes in the future. Continuous monitoring and public safety measures will be crucial as the country experiences these geological events in an effort to mitigate potential damages and ensure the safety of its citizens.
