Russia receives perpetrator of the assassination attempt on Alekseev after his arrest in Dubai

Russia has obtained a suspect involved in the assassination attempt on military intelligence deputy chief Alekseev, arrested in Dubai.

On Sunday, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) announced the arrest of a suspect believed to be responsible for the assassination attempt on General Vladimir Alekseev, the deputy chief of military intelligence. The suspect, a Russian citizen born in 1960, was apprehended in Dubai and subsequently extradited to Russia after fleeing there. According to the FSB, one of the suspect's accomplices has been arrested in Moscow, while a third accomplice, a woman, has fled to Ukraine.

The assassination attempt on Alekseev occurred when he was shot multiple times in a residential building in Moscow last Friday. Reports indicate that he underwent surgery following his injuries. This incident is part of a string of targeted assassinations that have taken place in Russia and occupied Ukrainian territories, targeting military officials, local politicians, and supporters of the Russian war in Ukraine, with some operations claimed by Kyiv.

Moreover, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has formally accused Ukraine of being behind the assassination attempt on Alekseev, highlighting the deteriorating relations and escalating tensions between the two countries, particularly in the context of ongoing conflicts and a series of violent incidents that have marked the war in Ukraine. The extradition of the suspect signifies a continuing focus by Russian authorities on eliminating threats to their military leadership, while further complicating the geopolitical situation with Ukraine.
