Nanaimo tugboat break-in suspect arrested for 3rd time in a week
A man has been arrested for the third time in a week for violating bail conditions related to a tugboat break-in incident in Nanaimo.
Marcel Alvin Fontaine, 44, has been arrested again in Nanaimo after being released on bail twice in connection with a tugboat break-in that led to a standoff with the RCMP. This incident, which occurred on February 1, involved Fontaine barricading himself inside a tugboat after trying to steal items from a nearby grocery store. Following this, the police had to deploy their Emergency Response Team and K9 unit before successfully apprehending him.
Court records show that Fontaine appeared before a Justice of the Peace after his latest arrest for allegedly breaching his bail conditions, which has raised concerns about his repeated offenses. His bail hearing was postponed, and there is a plan for another application by Crown counsel to revoke his bail during the next scheduled hearing. This pattern of arrests underscores ongoing issues regarding repeat offenders and the effectiveness of bail conditions in preventing further criminal activity.
The initial incident was not only alarming due to the attempted theft but also concerning because it escalated into a situation requiring significant police resources. The involvement of multiple law enforcement units highlights the potential dangers posed by such events and raises questions about community safety as well as the judicial responses to offenders like Fontaine who continue to re-offend despite existing orders.
