Benue MACBAN chair seeks IG’s intervention over son’s detention

The chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association in Benue State is calling for police intervention regarding the detention of his son.

Ardo Risku, the chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria in Benue State, has made a public appeal for intervention from Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun concerning the detention of his son, Mahmuda Risku. The incident occurred when Mahmuda was reportedly arrested while grazing cattle near a stream in the Ogobia community, raising concerns about the actions taken by local vigilantes.

According to reports, Mahmuda was detained after he was accused of grazing his cattle at the location, a common practice for herders in search of pasture. The situation escalated when local vigilante groups allegedly fired upon the cattle, leading to further complications. During a press conference held in Makurdi, Risku accused these vigilantes of acting unlawfully and emphasized that his son had done nothing wrong by simply tending to his livestock.

The case highlights ongoing tensions between herders and local communities in Nigeria, particularly in Benue State, where such incidents can exacerbate existing conflicts over land and resources. Risku’s appeal brings attention not only to his son's situation but also to the broader issues of law enforcement and community relations in the region. The involvement of high-ranking officials like the Inspector-General of Police could set a precedent for how similar cases are handled in the future.
