Former Knesset Member Eli Alaluf, Recipient of the Israel Prize, Passes Away at Age 80

Eli Alaluf, a former member of the Israeli Knesset and a recipient of the Israel Prize for his lifelong work for social equality and justice, has passed away at the age of 80.

Eli Alaluf, a former member of the Knesset and a distinguished Israel Prize laureate, has died at 80, leaving behind his partner and son. Celebrated for his relentless advocacy for social justice and equality, Alaluf's work focused significantly on the development of Israel's periphery, where he championed the causes of marginalized communities. His commitment to social improvements earned him recognition in 2011 when he received the Israel Prize for Lifetime Achievement.

Born in 1945 in Fes, Morocco, as the ninth of ten children, Alaluf's early life was marked by poverty following his father's death when he was just four years old. Despite these challenges, he became involved in community activities, including Jewish youth movements. His family later moved to Casablanca, where Alaluf volunteered in a Jewish orphanage before immigrating to Israel in 1967, serving in the Israel Defense Forces and pursuing a degree in political science at the Hebrew University.

Throughout his career, which included various roles aimed at uplifting disadvantaged populations in Israel, Alaluf served in the Knesset from 2015 to 2019. He was particularly noted for his efforts in addressing the disparities faced by lower-income communities and advocating for their development. His passing marks a significant loss for social activism in Israel, as his legacy continues to inspire many within the spheres of public service and social justice advocacy.
