Ramadan: Tomato farmers allay fears of price hike

Nigerian tomato farmers are predicting that prices will not rise during Ramadan due to a bumper harvest.

The Tomatoes Growers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria has assured consumers that there will not be the usual price increases for tomatoes and other vegetables during the upcoming Ramadan period. This statement was made by the Kaduna State Chairman, Mr. Rabiu Zuntu, who explained that unlike previous years when prices surged, this year is expected to see stable or even decreasing prices thanks to a bumper harvest and favorable planting conditions. Zuntu emphasized that last year's unfavorable agricultural conditions led to low prices, high input costs, and an overall decrease in food production. He noted a significant change this year, with the expectation that the overall production of vegetable crops will increase, which is critical as many Muslim faithful look to consume more vegetables to break their fast during Ramadan. This change in agricultural dynamics could lead to an abundance of vegetables on the market, thus preventing the typical price hikes observed during this season. Additionally, Zuntu pointed out the historical context of Ramadan affecting consumption patterns and subsequent price fluctuations. With fewer meals consumed by adherents during the fasting period—specifically skipping breakfast and lunch—there is often reduced demand for various food items. However, he remains optimistic about the supply of vegetable crops outpacing the demand, potentially resulting in lower prices overall, a positive development for consumers during the holy month.
