Thailand declared a 24-hour alcohol ban - tourists were frustrated
Thailand has imposed a 24-hour alcohol ban coinciding with the parliamentary elections, leading to frustration among tourists.
Thailand announced a 24-hour alcohol ban that began on Saturday at 6 PM and will end on Sunday at 6 PM, coinciding with the parliamentary elections taking place on Sunday. This ban, mandated by local law, prohibits the sale and consumption of alcohol to help maintain public order and prevent vote-buying during the election period. Similar restrictions were also in place during advance voting the weekend prior.
The unexpected ban caught some tourists off guard, particularly those from the United States. Local restaurant owner Sorathep Steve reported that American tourists expressed frustration when they attempted to purchase a bottle of wine during the restricted hours. He had to explain the legal regulations to them, highlighting that they were not in Thailand to vote, which seemed to add to their annoyance. Eventually, the tourists settled for ordering lemonade instead.
Sorathep, who owns five restaurants in Thailand, noted that while the ban causes disappointment among tourists, it is a standard procedure during election periods to ensure fair voting practices and uphold public safety. The enforcement of this alcohol ban reflects Thailand's commitment to maintaining order during significant national events, reinforcing the local customs and regulations governing electoral conduct.
