Avalanche danger has risen in the Alps - the approaching holiday season may bring new accidents
Avalanche dangers in the Alps have increased as the ski season approaches, with experts warning of potential accidents due to unstable snow conditions.
This winter, conditions in the Alps have been unusually dangerous, leading to predictions of increased avalanche accidents as the ski holiday season begins. Jussi Muittari, an avalanche safety and freeride instructor, emphasizes the heightened risks that skiers may face during this time. He cites that the European Avalanche Warning Service (EAWS) has also reported a rise in avalanche dangers across the region.
The cause of this increased avalanche risk is attributed to recent weather patterns. According to Muittari, the early winter saw significant snowfall, followed by an extended cold spell. This prolonged period of dry and cold conditions, lasting for nearly two months in some areas, has negatively affected the layering of snow. The newly fallen snow now rests atop a weak layer, resembling a house of cards, which is susceptible to collapsing and triggering avalanches.
As the holiday season approaches, it becomes critical for both skiers and snow sports enthusiasts to be informed about these dangers and to prioritize safety. With more individuals heading to the slopes, the risks of avalanche incidents are particularly timely, making awareness and preparedness essential for a safe skiing experience in the Alps during this period.
