Surajkund: The SI who lost his life had already received a medal, was set to retire in 30 days
The tragic incident at the Surajkund fair in Faridabad led to the death of a police sub-inspector who was trying to save injured individuals from a collapsed swing.
On Saturday, an unfortunate incident occurred at the Surajkund fair in Faridabad, where a swing collapsed, resulting in multiple injuries. In the chaos, 58-year-old Sub-Inspector Jagdish Prasad bravely attempted to rescue those trapped in the swing but suffered severe injuries himself, ultimately leading to his death. Prasad had been honored with a police medal by the Governor of Haryana in 2019-20, recognizing his dedicated service in the Haryana Armed Police since 1989.
Prasad was just a month away from retirement, having served 36 years in law enforcement. His heroic efforts during the incident have been widely acknowledged, leading to an announcement by Haryanaโs Director General of Police (DGP), Ajay Singhal, who pledged a compensation of 1 crore rupees to Prasad's family. In addition, the DGP promised a government job for a family member, stating that Prasad would be granted martyr status for sacrificing his life in an attempt to save others.
The incident has raised questions regarding the management and safety protocols at public events like the Surajkund fair. Investigations are underway, with an FIR filed against the operator of the swing for possible negligence that contributed to the accident. The implications of such incidents stress the need for improved safety standards during large gatherings to prevent future tragedies.
