Early Closing Times for 90% of Voting Stations in Shimane Prefecture Due to Snow
In Shimane Prefecture, 93.5% of the polling stations will close earlier than scheduled due to heavy snowfall, with some stations shutting down up to four hours early.
On the 8th, the Shimane Prefectural Election Management Committee announced that due to the impact of heavy snowfall, 548 out of 586 polling stations, or 93.5%, will have their closing times advanced for the upcoming House of Representatives election. Among these, 295 stations will close two hours early, and 180 stations will shut one hour earlier than planned. The most significant adjustment will see some stations in Masuda City closing up to four hours ahead of schedule.
This significant alteration in polling hours is intended to ensure voter safety amidst hazardous weather conditions. The adjustments come as a response to feedback from citizens highlighting the dangers posed by extreme snow, particularly concerning potential injuries while traveling to polling places. The announcement has stirred dissatisfaction among some voters, raising questions about the timing and management of election logistics.
The House of Representatives election is scheduled for February 8, 2026, and this early closing time may affect voter turnout and participation. The Election Management Committee is closely monitoring the situation and making adjustments as necessary to facilitate the electoral process, ensuring all eligible voters can make their voices heard despite the inclement weather.
