Sporting together in Lubāna: discathlon combines skiing and disc golf
Lubāna residents organized a discathlon, combining cross-country skiing and disc golf to promote active lifestyles and winter sports.
In Lubāna, Latvia, local residents organized a unique sporting event known as a discathlon, which creatively combines cross-country skiing and disc golf. The primary aim of the competition was to foster an active lifestyle among both locals and visitors while promoting winter sports and introducing an innovative format that is engaging and entertaining. Participants can enjoy the beauty of nature while competing in this unusual event.
The event was spearheaded by organizer Māris Valainis, who highlighted the significance of collaboration in community activities. Situated along Lubāna's 'Aiviekstes ozoli' nature trail, the disc golf club 'Lettes' developed a small disc golf course that operates alongside regular cross-country skiing activities during winter. The concept of the discathlon was pioneered by Rolands Gruzītis, a local advocate for disc golf. Although the idea was conceived last year, prior winter conditions prevented its execution, causing a delay in the event's initiation.
Valainis emphasized the importance of organizing new events that promote unity rather than division within the community. He believes that such gatherings can inspire creativity and collaboration among residents. By bringing the community together through innovative sports, events like the discathlon not only enhance local engagement but also strengthen the social fabric of Lubāna, showcasing how sports can be a vehicle for unity and fun in contemporary society.
