Breath but not solution given by recent rains to Attica's drought
Recent rains have provided some relief to Attica's water shortages, but the underlying situation remains dire.
Recent rainfall in Attica has offered a temporary reprieve from ongoing drought conditions, but the situation remains critical. Current water levels in the reservoirs that supply the region stand at 560 million cubic meters, significantly down from 667 million cubic meters a year ago and over 900 million cubic meters two years prior. Such figures highlight the persistent nature of the water scarcity issue facing Attica.
Despite the brief respite from the rains, the reality of water supply in Attica reflects a growing crisis. The Greek public water company, EYDAP, has been diligently tracking water levels since 1985 and reports that the current figures are alarming. While the recent rainfall has improved immediate conditions slightly, it is not sufficient to address the long-term challenges of water management and supply in the region.
In response to ongoing water shortages, EYDAP is promoting investments totaling 2.5 billion euros to enhance water infrastructure and management strategies. This significant investment underscores the urgency of the situation, as authorities seek to ensure a more reliable water supply for Attica in the face of climate challenges and increasing demand. Without adequate solutions, the water scarcity in Attica could have serious implications for its residents and the economy.
