Moon Han-ok has become the first female general to serve as the South Korean deputy commander of the ROK-U.S. Army Corps.
On August 8, Major General Moon Han-ok made history by becoming the first female general to assume the position of South Korean deputy commander of the ROK-U.S. Army Corps. She is a graduate of the 42nd class of female military officers, commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1997. Prior to her promotion to general last month, she served as the director of international military cooperation at the Joint Chiefs of Staff, handling crucial tasks related to the ROK-U.S. alliance and military committee meetings. During her career, Moon has held various positions that underscore her extensive experience in joint military operations with the United States. As a major, she worked as a strategic analyst in the planning office of the ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command, and was involved in key responsibilities concerning the transfer of wartime operational control during her time as a lieutenant colonel. Upon the establishment of the Combined Forces Command in 2015, she was already serving and has taken on significant roles including chief of staff for the South Korean side in 2021. The ROK-U.S. Army Corps is a unique military unit that unifies South Korean and U.S. Army forces under a single command structure. The formation comprises personnel from the U.S. 2nd Infantry Division and around 100 South Korean army support staff. With its annual training exceeding 100 exercises in various military functions, Moonβs appointment represents a significant step in enhancing inter-operability between the two nationsβ armed forces, particularly during a pivotal period concerning operational command transitions. Moon expressed her pride in her new role and emphasized her desire to improve the South Korea-U.S. alliance within tactical units while fostering a strong identity among junior officers in the South Korean military.
