‘Trying to Step on the Japanese Train’... The Reason for Starting Mobile Sales of Lotto After 22 Years
The South Korean government is launching mobile sales for the 'Lotto 6/45' lottery to attract younger buyers and prevent a decline in sales similar to that seen in Japan.
The South Korean government has decided to modernize its lottery sales by introducing mobile sales for the popular 'Lotto 6/45' lottery, starting from September 9. This initiative aims to engage younger generations who have shown less interest in lottery purchases compared to older populations. Previously, Lotto tickets could only be purchased at physical stores or via PC, but the new mobile platform aims to streamline the purchasing process, making it more convenient for tech-savvy youth. The mobile lottery sales will be available from 6 AM on Mondays to midnight on Fridays, with a purchase limit of 5,000 KRW per person per round.
This move is a response to concerns about declining lottery ticket sales among younger demographics, as highlighted in a 2022 survey by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance’s Lottery Commission. The survey indicated that the purchasing rate for individuals in their 20s and 30s was much lower than that of those over 60, with significant disparities in purchase amounts as well. The government is wary of repeating Japan's experience, where lottery sales peaked in 2005 but have since declined due to a lack of engagement from younger consumers. The trend in Japan illustrates the importance of attracting new buyers to sustain the lottery market, as their sales are projected to diminish further without new interest.
By adopting this mobile sales strategy, the South Korean government aims not only to enhance the accessibility of lottery purchases but also to maintain a steady inflow of revenue for public interest projects funded by lottery proceeds. As a portion of these funds is allocated to various public initiatives, ensuring a healthy lottery market is crucial for the continued support of such endeavors. Ultimately, the government's goal is to secure a long-term, sustainable future for the lottery revenue by appealing to younger generations and fostering a new wave of interest in lottery participation.
