Cha Eun-woo's 'Wonderfuls' and Jo Jin-woon's 'Signal 2'... the fate of works encountering actor risks
The release of Cha Eun-woo's upcoming series 'Wonderfuls' on Netflix is uncertain due to tax evasion allegations against him, reflecting ongoing challenges faced by productions tied to actors with controversies.
South Korean actor and singer Cha Eun-woo is embroiled in a tax evasion scandal involving over 20 billion KRW, drawing attention to the future of his upcoming Netflix series 'Wonderfuls'. The situation escalated after another actor, Jo Jin-woon, faced a similar crisis that put the release of his drama 'Second Signal' in jeopardy, thus exposing the growing 'actor risk' issue in the entertainment industry. Cha Eun-woo's management company, Fantagio, has stated that the matter has not been conclusively decided, but public outcry surrounding the substantial tax penalty remains strong.
'Wonderfuls', which is expected to be released in the second quarter of this year, has found itself in a difficult position due to the controversy. Netflix had previously announced 'Wonderfuls' during its 'Next on Netflix 2026' event, describing it as a comedic action drama set in 1999, where ordinary individuals gain superhero-like abilities and battle villains threatening their peace. With the involvement of prominent figures such as the director Yu In-sik and co-star Park Eun-bin, the project was anticipated to be a highlight this year.
However, with the mounting controversy surrounding Cha Eun-woo, who is set to share significant screen time with Park Eun-bin, the potential for actor replacements or reductions in screen time is complicated by the fact that filming has already been completed. There are discussions about delaying the release of 'Wonderfuls' until the allegations are resolved, but Netflix has not provided a definitive statement regarding the series, keeping the future of the project in limbo as the industry grapples with the implications of scandals on artistic endeavors.
