Government to Issue Early Welfare Benefits for Low-Income Families Before Lunar New Year

The South Korean government will provide early welfare benefits for low-income households on January 13, ahead of the Lunar New Year holidays.

The South Korean government has announced that it will issue early welfare benefits for low-income families on January 13, a week earlier than the scheduled payment date on the 20th. This decision, made by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, aims to alleviate the economic burden on low-income households during the increased spending period associated with the Lunar New Year celebrations. The early payments will help support these families as they prepare for the holiday season, which typically involves purchasing traditional foods and gifts.

The welfare benefits being advanced include various forms of assistance such as living allowances, housing benefits, disability allowances, and support for single-parent families, among others, covering a total of 28 different types of welfare assistance overseen by four government ministries. Approximately 14 trillion won (around USD 11.8 billion) will be allocated for this early disbursement, showcasing the government's commitment to supporting the most vulnerable populations during significant cultural events.

Minister Jeong Eun-kyeong expressed hope that this measure would ease the financial strain on the underprivileged groups leading up to the Lunar New Year and enable them to celebrate the holiday in a warmer and more enjoyable manner. In addition, the government anticipates that this influx of funds will stimulate local economies as families use the benefits to shop and support local businesses during the holiday season.
