The weather turns upside down at the beginning of the week - Relief for the south
The weather is set to warm up early in the week, bringing some relief to southern Finland from freezing temperatures.
Early in the week, southern Finland is expected to experience a warming trend, as reported by meteorologist Jouko Korhonen from the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Temperatures in southern and western Finland are likely to rise to around -5 degrees Celsius, easing the harsh cold that has affected the region. Additionally, the coldest nighttime temperatures, which previously reached over -10 degrees, may diminish significantly.
Interestingly, last week, the coldest temperatures were recorded surprisingly just south of Lapland, with Uusimaa breaking winter frost records. In the northern parts of Central Finland and Northern Finland, however, temperatures may still drop below -20 degrees Celsius, particularly in regions north of Oulu where local temperatures could occasionally reach near -25 degrees Celsius. The variability in temperatures across different areas has been notable.
Moreover, Korhonen cautions motorists about potentially slippery intersections that lack proper maintenance, highlighting that travelers should be vigilant despite the warming trend occurring in southern Finland. This shift in weather patterns not only affects daily life for residents but also indicates the overall variability of winter conditions in Finland.
